The incident began in North Babylon at an apartment on Weeks Road, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said 66-year-old Christopher Doran lured a female house cleaner to his residence under the guise of hiring her on Monday, Sept. 2.
When the victim arrived, Doran told her she needed to drive him in her car to a bank to withdraw money. After instructing the woman to drive him to several locations between Bay Shore and Babylon, Doran told the victim to pull into a Chase Bank parking lot.
Once the car was parked, Doran pulled a knife and demanded money from the victim, prosecutors said. He then grabbed the woman as she attempted to flee the car.
The victim eventually managed to escape the vehicle and shut the driver’s side door, locking Doran inside. Unable to open the doors, he reportedly used a hammer to smash his way through a window before fleeing the scene.
Suffolk County Police arrested Doran the following day. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, he was indicted on the following counts:
- Attempted robbery
- Robbery
- Criminal mischief
“The allegations in this case represent a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
Doran was ordered jailed on a $200,000 bond. If convicted, he faces 16 years to life in prison.
